Died on this date - 19th October.....William Arthur Long was born in 1894 in the parish of Brigham, Keswick, Cumbria, England.

According to information supplied by his father for the Roll of Honour - William Arthur Long came to Australia when he was 19.

William Arthur Long enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 10th January, 1916 as a 21 year old Farm Labourer from Balmain, Sydney, NSW. He stated on his Attestation Papers that he had previously been rejected as unfit for His Majesty’s Service because of bad teeth.

Private Long embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Port Lincoln (A17) on 4th May, 1916 with 3rd Reinforcements of 59th Battalion & disembarked at Suez on 10th June, 1916. He embarked from Alexandria on 2nd August, 1916 & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 8th August, 1916.

Private Long was marched in from Overseas in England on 21st August, 1916 to 15th Training battalion, Camp 26, Larkhill, Wiltshire. He proceeded overseas to France & was transferred to 57th Battalion on 10th November, 1916.

Private Long was transferred to 60th Battalion & joined them at the Front on 25th November, 1916.
Private Long was sent to Sniping School between 9th July & 22nd July, 1917. He was on leave to UK from 2nd October. 1917 & rejoined his Battalion on 15th October, 1917.

Private William Arthur Long was to be Scout Corporal from 2nd August, 1918. He was transferred to 59th Battalion on 25th September, 1918.

Corporal Long was on leave to UK from 11th October, 1918.

Corporal William Arthur Long died on 19th October, 1918 at 54 Bromley St, Workington, Cumbria from Bronchial Bronchitis. The informant on the death certificate was Alexander McCutcheon, brother-in-law, of 54 Bromley St, Workington.

Corporal William Arthur Long was buried in Cockermouth Cemetery, Cumbria, England. He is the only WW1 Australian War Grave.
