ERNEST YELLAND, son of Mr. G. J. and Mrs. Catherine Yelland, was born at Taringa, Queensland, on 14th August, 1894. He was educated at the Ipswich Boys’ Grammar School, and entered the service of the Bank at Ipswich on 23rd January, 1912. He was transferred to Fortitude Valley on 8th March, 1912.

Enlisting with the A.I.F. on 25th April, 1915, Ernest Yelland left Australia as second-lieutenant in the 42nd Battalion. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1916 and to that of captain the following year.

Captain Ernest Yelland served in Egypt in June, 1916, and in France and Belgium from October, 1916, to May, 1918. In June, 1917, he was mentioned in despatches for distinguished service in the field.
