G. Bennett for the Distinguished Conduct Medal. “During the operations at POZIERES 25th to 27th July, 1916, these men did magnificent work in attending to, and removing the wounded. They worked continuously for about 40 hours between the front trenches and the Aid Post, which was situated about a mile back. During the whole time the trenches were subjected to an intense bombardment of heavy guns and were also under rifle and machine gun fire, while a continuous and heavy barrage, was maintained over the ground between the front line and the Aid Post.

The ground was badly cut-up, making the work of removing the wounded more difficult and affording no shelter whatever. By their devotion to duty these men kept the trenches clear of wounded, and this greatly assisted the Coy Commanders in keeping up the morale and high spirits of the Companies.”
