To my Pa;
I can’t leave this blank, so I will write what I know and remember.
My Pa passed away when I was seven years old, however I still remember him, the day he left us, the funeral and scattering of his ashes. Surrounded by peace and love.
The best memories that come to mind where when he would take my brother and I to the park then for ice cream after. He’d let me sit in the front seat whist my grandmother (Moyra Beatrice Pullen) nee:Cartledge would take a back seat, he would place a Collingwood Towel over me, I’m sure it was to protect the car from spilled ice cream but at the time I thought it was for my clothes hahaha. Every Autumn that I can remember he’d rake the leaves in a pile and throw them over our heads in a game of chase. We have this on Video which is precious to have.
He loved HOLDEN cars, I followed in his footsteps there. As well as maintaining his love for the Collingwood Football Club.
After marriage to a country girl from Sale whom he met whilst serving in the RAAF he built a home in Surrey Hills not far from his childhood home of Hawthorn.
Many years later George became a father to one child in 1957, a son Barrie. He worked tirelessly as a successful Businessman until his sudden and unexpected death from undiagnosed advanced heart disease on the 8th of October 1991 at just 72 years old.
George enjoyed travel with his wife and remained devoted to his wife until his death. He instilled values and morals when raising his son, who then went on to pass this down to his two children, myself and my brother whom both live out the legacy of working hard, providing, remaining successful and helping those around us George enjoyed, his Football, his job, his church, his friends, his two grandchildren and being a provider. He had just purchased a brand new VN commodore just a few months prior to his passing.
As per his wishes he was cremated with his ashes scattered in the memorial garden of his Church in Surrey Hills. This garden was exhumed and relocated to a different location to make way for housing which now resides where the church was.
George is remembered as a stern, fair, honest, provider for his family.
We are proud of his service to our Country. We are grateful he returned home. We remember all those that did not. I hope this fills in some blanks Pa, Love Always your granddaughter Joanne.
