Richard was born in April 1889 in Budock, Cornwall, his father, Richard, was 24 and his mother, Sophia, was 24. He married Johanna Oldreive on 23 June 1917 in Truro, Cornwall. He emigrated to Australia per the Oruba on 27th June 1908 arriving in Fremantle.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 10 March 1915 when he was 25 years old. He is remembered on the war memorial at St Gluvias Church near Penryn, Cornwall.
