Son of Edward William O'Donnell and Ellen O'Donnell of 'Yarragundry', Wagga Wagga, NSW.

Brother of Edward William O'Donnell who returned to Australia on 23 December 1918 having served with the 6th Light Horse Regiment 

Commenced return to Australia on 2 January 1919 aboard HT Berrimah disembarking on 17 February 1919 at Melbourne then to Sydney by boat.
