A well-known and respected resident of Bowen in the person of Mr. George Cecil West passed away at his residence on Sunday after a lengthy illness. The late Mr. West was born in Bowen 53 years ago. with the exception of war service abroad had resided here continuously. He entered the bakery trade with his mother as a young man, in premises in Powell Street, and was in that business when the war broke out. He enlisted and saw active, service in France with the 11th Field Artillery Brigade, A.I.F.
On his return He took up farming at Argyle Park, Queens Beach, where he had since resided.
The late Mr West earned the great respect and liking of the many who were associated with him in everyday life and in the various bodies to which he gave support. Of an energetic mind cheerful nature, he was the type who form the backbone of very necessary organisations that do not always receive whole hearted public backing. His willingness to work in guy good cause made him always welcome, and the bodies of which he was a member can ill afford to lose his valuable help. In farming sphere he proved a useful member of the Bowen District Growers Association, and the members appreciation of him was shown in his long term as President of that body. He was for number of years the delegate representing Bowen and other area's on the Other Fruits Sectional Group Committee of the Committee of Direction until 2 years ago.
The Bowen P. A. & M. Association found him to he a loyal and conscientious member, and he was a familiar figure to Show patrons and exhibitors in his, capacity as poultry steward. Where there was work to be done the late Mr. West was quick to offer his services. A keen Horticulturalist, he was an enthusiastic member of the Bowen Horticultural Society, and in that body also did sterling work In the organisation of Flower shows.
Deceased was a loyal member of the R.S.S.I.L.A. Bowen Sub-branch, and a prominent figure in the affairs of the Masonic and Oddfellows Bodges. As a supporter of his church he was to the front again and gave years of service as member of the Church of England Church in short, the late George West was if splendid example of what a good citizen should be, and the world would do with more like him.
He is survived by his mother, wife and two children, Victoria and Keith, and by two step sisters, Mrs. Weinheimer (Townsville) and Miss Eva Boston, and one step brother Mr. Victor Boston. Deep sympathy will he extended to them.
The funeral left the Holy, Trinity Church at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Rev Hubbard performing the last sad rites at the graveside.
