Elliott left Fremantle on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on 12 February 1916, proceeding to France with the 11th Battalion on 4 April. After spending a week in hospital at Etaples with influenza he rejoined his unit on 27 May. Elliott was appointed Lance Corporal on 28 October. He was killed in action at Pozieres / Bullecourt on 6 May 1917. Elliott’s father, Thomas, received his son’s Memorial Plaque, Memorial Scroll, Victory Medal and British War Medal between 1921 and 1923.
The Advertiser, Saturday, 8 December 1917 carried the following notice: “Lance Corporal E. B. Watkins.... recently died of wounds in France.”
