Herbert West was born and raised in Rupanyup Victoria and was working as a farmer before he enlisted. He was only in France for 3 months before he was reported killed in action during the heavy fighting near Pozieres between 19-22 August 1916.

His remains were discovered just north west of Pozieres during 1936, and his identity disc was returned to his father at Rupanyup the same year. His body was reinterred in the London Cemetery Extension.

His brother, 6096 William Ernest West 59th Battalion AIF, was severely wounded during 1918 but returned to Australia on recovery.
