Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From How We Served:

817 Trooper Michael Edward Ferrar had been engaged in sheep farming and was resident of Swansea, Tasmania, when he enlisted for War Service on the 8th of December 1914 at the age of 19. Allocated to the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, 1st AIF,
Michael was shipped over to Egypt on the 29th of January 1915 for further training and was with his Regiment when they were sent to the Gallipoli Peninsular.

On his arrival Michael entered the trenches on the 9th of May and had remained on Gallipoli for less than a month when he was wounded in action on the 29th of May.

Firstly, being evacuated to Egypt, Trooper Ferrar was then sent on to England on the 27th of July 1915 for further hospitalisation.
Receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the thigh, Michael was also diagnosed as suffering pulmonary tuberculosis, which he had contracted prior to leaving for Gallipoli, whilst he was still training in Egypt.

Michael embarked for his return to Australia as an invalid on the 6th of March 1916, and after further periods in and out of Military Hospitals, he was finally discharged from the 1st AIF on the 21st of June 1916 for his re-entry into civilian life.

Following his official discharge from the 1st AIF, Michael continued being treated for illness incurred whilst on War Service, and whilst a patient of the 11th Australian General Hospital (Caulfield) he finally succumbed to the effects of TB on the 25th of August 1919 at the age of 24.

Following his death Trooper Michael Ferrar was afforded an official War Grave following his premature death due to his War Service and was formally interred within Brighton General Cemetery, Victoria,
