Distinguished Conduct Medal
'fFor conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. As a scout, he gained most valuable information, which greatly assisted in the machine gun work, and continually passed through heavy barrages when carrying messages. With another man he captured a machine gun and seven prisoners, and showed splendid courage and initiative.'

BRAVE SCOUT HONORED
Gunner J. J. Doherty, 2nd Machine Gun Company, was awarded the
Distinguished Conduct Medal for services when acting as a scout,
he gained valuable information which greatly assisted in the machine gun work and continually passed through heavy barrages. When
carrying messages with another man he captured a machine gun and
seven prisoners, and showed fine courage and initiative. Gunner
Doherty is the second son of Mr and Mrs Doherty, of Argyle street,
Fawkner. His brother, P. Doherty, is in France with the 6th Field
Company Engineers.
