Alan was christened as Allan, but appears to have used the one L version throughout his life. On his enlistment papers he gave his date of birth as 23 Aug 1919, but was born on 23 Aug 1922. The reason to become three years older was to meet Service enlistment age requirements, as did two of his brothers - David and Ivan Williams.
