Alexander Maynard Dunlop Henderson was born in New Zealand in 1913. He was a single motor salesman when he enlisted in January 1940. He was immediately commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Artillery. He embarked in April 1940
He was promoted to Captain in March 1941. At about the same time he embarked for Greece with 2/2 Field Regiment, escaping Crete in June 1941. His mention in despatches for services in the Western Desert and Libya (specifically Cyrenaica) was announced in July 1941.
On 7 August he landed back in Melbourne. After a period of leave he returned to his regiment and his wife settled in New Zealand, perhaps because of the worsening threat of a Japanese invasion in Australia. He was promoted to Major in March 1943 and undertook Australia based service with 2/2nd and 2/3rd Field Regiments before embarking for New Guinea in October 1944. Alexander landed at Aitape on 7 November 1944 and served with 2/3rd (Jungle) Field Regiment.
In June 1945 he was effected by lichus planus tropicus and was medically evacuated to Australia. In November he was posted as a senior officer to Cowra POW Camp. He was discharged in 1947.
