An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
65 years ago today, on the 7th October 1959, Private James Edward Smith, referred to as Edward or Ted, 13th Battalion (Reg No-780), farm hand from Moore Creek, Attunga, via Tamworth, New South Wales and Hamilton?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 76. CATHOLIC 3-82. 52.
Born at Tamworth, New South Wales on the 22nd June 1891 to James J and Mary Ann Smith; husband of Veronica Gladys Rebecca Smith nee Cochrane, married 13.2.1917, Tamworth, N.S.W., died 29.1.1976, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 81, sleeping here, Ted enlisted on the 17th September 1914 at Rosebury Park Racecourse Camp, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board TRANSPORT A38 Ulysses on the 22nd December 1914.
Wounded in action - 22.8.1915 (GSW right knee, dislocated, slight).
Embarked for England 7.9.1915.
Admitted to hospital 15.9.1915 (pleurisy).
Commenced return to Australia 11.3.1916.
Ted was invalided home on the 22nd April 1916, being discharged medically unfit (displaced knee) on the 15th July 1916.
Mr. Smith’s name has not been inscribed on the Tamworth Public School First World War Roll of Honor or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Ted’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
There is also a Memorial Wall Plaque that has been placed at The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall located inside the grounds by persons unknown.
