Captain Douglas Charles Mowbray (Service Nos:296662/VX39720) initially served in the Militia from 1928 with 8th Battalion and 10th Field Brigade, and was a Lieutenant when he enlisted in the AIF on 5 February 1941. Lieutenant Mowbray was attached to 2/12 Field Regiment, and served in the Middle East (10 April 1941 - 23 May 1942) - he was WiA (shell wound to right arm) on 23 May 1941. Lieutenant Mowbray then served in New Guinea (30 November 1942 - 19 March 1944), where he was appointed Captain on 22 June 1943. Captain Mowbray was attached to 106 Australian General Hospital (AGH) in Bougainvlle (5 January 1945 - 6 August 1945), and was attached to 2/12 Field Regiment at Termination of Appointment on 30 September 1946.
Eldest of three children, Charles was born in Bendigo, Victoria in 1911 to Archibald Douglas Mowbray (b1876 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Matilda Mitten (b1882 in Tarnagulla, Victoria). Archibald (a Bank Clerk/Accountant) and Matilda (a Milliner) married in 1910 in Bendigo and lived in St Arnaud, Clunes and Ballarat, where they raised their family and Archibald was a Bank Accountant and Bank Manager with the English, Scottish and Australian (ESA) Bank.
Charles worked in Melbourne and Lang Lang as a Bank Clerk/Officer with the ESA Bank before enlisting in the AIF in 1941. Following his Discharge, he was posted as Bank Manager to Casterton, Victoria and in 1951 in Brisbane married Patricia (Tricia) Beatrice Johnson (b1922 in Warwick, QLD) - Trica served with the VAD and Australian Army Medical Women's Service (Service No:QX61122). Charles and Tricia lived in Victoria - in Hamilton and St Arnaud before settling in Maryborough via Ballarat, where they raised their family and Charles was a Bank Manager with the ESA Bank. Charles died in 1998 and Tricia in 2018.
