Died on this date - 26th September.......Vere Claude Marshall was born at Macquarie Plains, Tasmania in 1896.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 22nd April, 1915 as a 19 year old Shop Assistant.


Private Vere Claude Marshall, Service number 1145, embarked from Brisbane, Queensland on 29th June, 1915 with his older brother Private John Herbert Marshall - both with 26th Battalion.


The 26th Battalion, after training in Egypt, landed at Gallipoli on 12 September.


Private Vere Claude Marshall was severely wounded at Anzac on 14th September, 1915. He was transferred to Hospital Ship Aquitania the same day with bullet wounds to Spinal column.

Sadly he died on the Hospital Ship on 26th September, 1915.


Private Vere Claude Marshall was buried in Netley Military Cemetery, Hampshire, England where 49 other Australian WW1 Soldiers are buried.

 

[Private Vere Claude Marshall's older brother Private John Herbert Marshall was killed in action on 5th August, 1916. He is remembered on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. A younger brother - Private Percy Charles Marshall was awarded the Military Medal & was returned to Australia on 31st March, 1919.]
