Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Cyril Andrew Johnson was the youngest son of Terence and Bridget Johnson of Dungog and West Maitland, New South Wales.
Sergeant Hardy 13th Battalion gave the following information on Johnson in his Red Cross wounded and missing file,
“I knew Private Johnson very well. He was in my platoon He was killed at Gueudecourt. We had to take two or three lines of trenches about three or four hundred yards away from our own trench. It was rather a tough nut. They kept us busy till midnight after we went over and in counter attacks, Johnson was helping Captain Murray, who got the VC, I heard he was killed instantly by a shell. He was a good boy, had not been long with us. He came from Singleton, I was wounded myself the same night.”
Dungog Chronicle 22 May 1917.
KILLED IN ACTION. CYRIL JOHNSON.
"The sad news conveyed to Mrs Johnson of Dungog, by Father Meagher, of the death of her youngest son Cyril who was killed in action in France during the recent terrific fighting there. Cyril, better known as 'Irish' was a popular figure in this locality where he lived until just before enlisting. A happy, carefree youth always termed a ‘hard case,’ it is sad to hear of his death. Dungog has paid a big tribute already, but still the toll goes on. It is however, a source of gratitude to the families of those that fall, to know that they died in full and noble devotion to their country's cause. Cyril, who was about 25 years of age, enlisted early in the war. To his mother and family, we extend our sincerest sympathy."
