Arthur did his initial training with A Company, 2nd Depot Battalion from 4
August 1915 until 16 September. During this period he transferred to the 27th
Battalion. Arthur left Adelaide on HMAT A7 Medic on 12 January 1916 and
was sent to France with his unit on 9 August. He sustained a mild wound in
action to his left leg on 21 August, but was able to rejoin his unit on 27
February 1917.
He was wounded again on 4 March, being shot in the left shoulder and was
sent to England on 21 March, where he was treated at Weymouth Hospital,
then attached to a Training Depot until December 1918. He received ongoing
treatment to his damaged shoulder. Upon being classed as medically unfit,
Arthur was returned to Australia from Devonport on the Delta on 24 January
1919 where he was discharged on 24 April.
