James Samuel Hearne was born at his family property "SALISBURY", Blanket Flat, near Bigga NSW. Australia.

After finishing school he worked as a Grazier with his Father Samuel Hearne at "SALISBURY". James became a member of the Bigga Rifle Club in 1908. At Goulburn, NSW on 28th July, 1915, he enlised to fight for his country. After reporting to Liverpoool on the 1st October 1915, James departed Australia the following day. He was attached to the 12th Light Horse and saw active service in Egypt. He was admitted to hospital a few time for both Malaria and septic hand and eventually had a finger amputated. 18th July 1919 he boarded the "DUNLUCE CASTLE" and headed home to Australia, arriving 30th August and demobilised from the A.I.F. on 16th November 1919. James served with his brother Wallace Hearne in The 12th Light Horse. They were both Crack Shots and served their country with pride.
