Elder of the two brothers (Ronald and Keith) who served in WWII, Private Ronald Victor Hemley (Service Nos:V10057/VX115514) initially served in the ACMF as a Trooper with 1st Armoured Regiment from 16 December 1941 to 29 September 1942, enlisting the following day in the AIF. Private Hemley - Trade Group Driver Mechanic - was attached to 101 Motor Regiment, then transferred to 1st Australian Armoured Regiment on 28 November 1944, and was posted to 1st Australian Tracked Amphibious Vehicle Platoon on 22 May 1944. Driver Hemley was attached to 127 General Transport Coy at Discharge on 9 July 1946.
Ron was born in Landsborough via Stawell in 1919, third of nine children of George Chandler Hemley (b1890 in Stawell, Victoria) and Ruby Susan Blake (b1894 in Landsborough via Stawell, Victoria). George and Ruby married in 1915 in Stawell, and setttled in Callawadda where they raised their family and George was a Farm Hand and then Farmer.
A Farm Hand in Callawadda when he enlisted in the Army in 1941, Ron returned to Callawadda following his Discharge, and in 1950 in Stawell married Millicent Nancy Johnson (b1928 in Stawell, Victoria). Ron and Millicent settled in Callawadda, where they raised their family and Ron was a Labourer/Contractor until his death in 1978. Millicent died in 2022.
