After being discharged he lived in Gresham Road, Brixton, England where he was acting as a buying agent for his father's retail hardware, glass and china business  in Redfern, NSW. At the time Herbert was in a partnership with J. Walker Son & Co who were general merchants and agents in Sydneham, London, England
