William James Herman was born in London, United Kingdom. According to his service record William’s parents were his Dad James and his Mother Lauria. Before being enlisted in WW1 William was a christian and worked as a labourer.
William Herman was 5 feet and 4 ½ inches, weighed 160 lbs and was 27 years and 9 months old when he enlisted. William stated that his religion was Church of England.
William Herman embarked to France on the 4/8/17 boarding the H.M.A.T “THEMISTOCLES”. After William arrived in Northern France he was assigned to work in the 3rd tunneling company and his service number was 7363. After the 3rd Australian Tunneling Company moved to Northern France they took over Hill 70 and Loos Hulluch Sector.
His mission was to construct tunnels and mines for offensive actions against the enemies. In addition William was also tasked to other underground tasks like building deep dugouts for troop housing for large groups of men. William was reported to be wounded during the war from being gassed in the Loos Hulluch Trench.
William was discharged on the 21st of June 1919.
