Thomas McLeod Carmichael was born on the 4th of June, 1892. He attended the Melbourne High School in 1908-9, passed the Junior Public examination, and afterwards obtained the Trained Teacher's Certificate in Manual Arts. He was at wood work centers in Maryborough and Benalla before enlisting, and had the reputation of a willing and hard-working teacher, much interested in his profession.

He enlisted as a Private on the 18th of August, 1914, and embarked as a Sergeant with the 7th Battalion on the transport Hororata on the 19th of October.

After training in Egypt, he proceeded with his unit to Gallipoli, and was at the Landing on the 25th of April, 1915. He was promoted to commissioned rank on the 28th, and died of wounds at Cape Helles on the 8th of May. He was the son of Mrs. A. Carmichael, of Esmond, near Yarrawonga.
