Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Another Forgotten Digger of The Great War resting peacefully but anonymously at Sandgate Cemetery.

68 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 2nd April 1953, Private John Baden Powell (also known as Chris) Christopherson, 36th Battalion (Reg No-3169), carter from 73 Charles Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales and 20 Reay Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. ANGLICAN 3-189. 12.

Born at Cooks Hill, New South Wales on the 18th May 1900 to Richard and Mary Christopherson nee Martin; husband of Margaret Christopherson nee Blakey (married 1922, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1990, also sleeping here), John enlisted March 1917 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

John stated his age to be 18 years and 9 months, actual age 16 years 9 months.

Admitted to hospital at sea on the 11.5.1917 (gastritis), 17.11.1917 (influenza), John returned home on the 21st March 1918, being discharged for being underage on the 22nd March 1918.

Mr Christopherson’s name has been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour and the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll (photos, unveiled on the 9th March 1919, 160 names inscribed, on display at St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton, N.S.W.).

I located Chris resting in an unmarked grave, forgotten, so October 2015 I placed a cross on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore honour and dignity to Chris.
Older brother Francis Claude (Reg No-549 and 59015, Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train and 17th Battalion, born 1898, died 1957) also resting at the cemetery in a marked grave. METHODIST 4-15. 29.

Lest We Forget.
