Son of Archibald and Elizabeth Riley MCDOUGALL of Legerwood (formerly Scottsdale), Tasmania.

Had 4 sisters and 4 brothers, one of whom (3075 Pte John Henry Gregg MCDOUGALL, 40th Inf Bn) was killed in action at Ypres, in WW1. Brother Frederick Riley MCDOUGALL also served with the 40th Infantry Battalion in WW1. 

Awarded British War Medal and the Victory Medal in July 1924.
