| 23 Jun 1941: | Imprisoned Syria - Operation Exporter, Whilst serving with the 2/33 Battalion in Syria, Ronald Albert Deane was captured when his unit was counter attacked by French forces. His unit was defending a ridge known as "The Pimple", which was on the other side of Fort Khiam, which was previously captured by his unit. When Ronald was captured, he was hit on the left side of the head with a rifle butt. Ronald was then recovered by Australian Troops in Aleppo near the Turkish Border and was sent south by train. | |
| 15 Sep 1943: | Wounded Australian Military Forces (WW2) , Private, NX7836, 2nd/33rd Infantry Battalion, New Guinea - Huon Peninsula / Markham and Ramu Valley /Finisterre Ranges Campaigns, On September 15th, 1943, during the New Guinea campaign, Ronald was Wounded in Action after being shot in the right thigh and right thumb. The gunshot wounds were severe, causing a compound fracture in his hand and a sciatic nerve lesion in his leg. Ronald was immediately evacuated to the 2/9th Australian General Hospital and was sent back to Australia via Hospital Ship on October 2nd, 1943. For nearly 2 years of treatment at the 113th Australian General Hospital, he was discharged on the 21st of July 1945, officially deemed medically unfit for further service. | |
