19 Dec 1917: Embarked AIF WW1, Private, 4949, 1st Pioneer Battalion, Embarked on HMAT Ulysses (A38) from Sydney 0n 19th December 1917, disembarking at Suez, Egypt on 16th January 1918. In February 1918 embarked from Port Said to Italy, then Cherbourg France then Southampton England,
10 Mar 1918: Involvement AIF WW1, Private, 4949, Admitted to hospital with tonsillitis on 10th March 1918, discharged on 19th May 1918.
22 Sep 1918: Involvement AIF WW1, Private, 4949, Admitted to hospital with chronic gastritis on 22nd September 1918, was admitted to various hospitals before being discharged on 16th July 1919.

Biography contributed

Before the War

John Wallace Bartley was born in Delegate in 1898, the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Bartley.  After completing his schooling, he was employed as a labourer on a dairy farm.  During his youth, his family moved between Bombala and Delegate up until his enlistment at which stage they wer living in Delegate.

After the War

John Bartley returned to Australia after finally becoming well enough to be discharged from hospital on 22nd September 1919, exactly one year after being admitted with chronic gastritis.  On his return to Australia, John was hired as a farmer for a minimum period of six months.  He married Neta Jane O'Reilly in 1923 at Queanbeyan.  John passed away in 1978.
