Lance Corporal James Arthur Monaghan was a part of the 1st Tunneling Company which was meant to be deployed at Gallipoli but was instead moved to France in May 1916. The battalion-sized "Australian Mining Corps" was assembled from men with a background in civilian mining. Soon after arriving in western Europe in May 1916, the battalion was split into three tunneling and one repairs company, and the corps headquarters dissolved.

James Arthur Monaghan was born in Kanmantoo SA and was a working miner in Canberra when he was recruited because of his background knowledge of mining. He enlisted in Perth, Western Australia when he enlisted he had a wife called Catherine.

Lance Corporal James Arthur Monaghan MM was a part of the 3rd Tunneling Company which was deployed to France in May 1916. The Company was made up of men with a background in civilian deepshaft mining. Soon after arriving in western Europe in May 1916, the company was sent to the Lavernte/Lys/Loos sectors and did not serve with ANZAC & Australian Corps.

James Arthur Monaghan was born in Kanmantoo SA and had worked as a miner in Kanmantoo, St. Ives, and at various mines in Western Australia. He was recruited from Coolgardie because of his background knowledge of deepshaft mining. He enlisted in Perth, Western Australia when he enlisted he had a wife called Catherine whom he later seperated from. From 1930 until his death he was a permanent resident of his cousin Irene Monaghan Boarding house in Franklin Street Adelaide.
