Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Henry James Hall was born in 1892, on 16th September, in Auburn, South Australia. Raised in a household of 6 children, Henry James attended his early education at Auburn Primary School. While his parents, Mary Charles, and James Henry Hall, worked and raised the family, he lived with them and became a painter, he then married Ethel Ada Hall. They had a daughter Sylvia Hall and, at age 24, he left to enlist in the 5th Pioneer Battalion.

He enlisted as a Private on 27th June 1916 and eventually embarked on the battlefield on 21st September 1916. The 5th pioneer Battalion was the Australian infantry and light engineer

Henry James fought on the Western Front in France and Belgium after the battalion's establishment on the European battlefields earlier. Henry James served and was in place of one of the most significant battles the AIF took part in during the mid of 1916. Henry James saw the war out but then became ill with Fururanculosis (abscess of hair folicle) and was hospitalised on 30th November 1918. He was discharged but then returned to hospital in March 1919

In 1919 April 1st Henry James eventually made his way back after the 5th pioneer battalion dismembered and returned the remaining wounded and alive soldiers to Australia. Nearing the commencement of 1920, the remaining time Henry James spent alive was with his young daughter and wife, happily together after the delightful reunion.

Henry James passed away due to tuberculosis at 34,  on 7th July 1927. Henry James Hall is buried at the AIF Cemetery, West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia Light Oval 4N E 10.
