T/Sergeant James Arthur Compston (Service No:253) enlisted in the AIF on 19 October 1914 and embarked with 10th Light Horse Regiment from Fremantle for Alexandria on 17 February 1915 on board HMAT A47 Ashobra. Private Compston served in Gallipoli and was promoted to Corporal on 22 January 1916. In France he was promoted to Gunner and T/Sergeant, serving with 4th Divisonal Ammuniniton Column and 4th Divisional Field Artlllery. T/Sergeant Compston embarked from England for the RTA on 26 December 1918 on board HT Burmah and was Discharged on 23 March 1919.

Born in 1886 in Goroke Victoria, James was second of seven children of William Compston (b1861 in Coleraine, Victoria) and Ellen Susan Sutton (b1865 in Portland, Victoria). William (a Butcher) and Ellen married in 1884 in Goroke, Victoria and by 1896 had moved to the Eastern Goldfields in Western Australia. William - a Master Butcher - and Ellen lived in Kalgoorlie, Niagara and Geraldton before settling in Fremantle.

James - a Master Butcher - was in Geraldton when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. Following his Discharge, James settled in Fremantle where, in 1930, he married Rose Mary Gardner (nee Mahony; b1893 in Woodend, Victoria) - Rose was a Widow. James and Rose lived in Fremantle where they raised Rose's children and James was a Master Butcher. James died in 1942 and Rose in 1989.
