Henry (birth name Harry Llewellyn Hislop) was the first born child of Henry (Harry) Hislop (born 1862 in Bunbury, WA) and Louisa Britton (born 1866 in Bunbury, WA). Louisa married Oscar August Anderson (born 1854 in Norway) in 1889 in Bunbury WA.

Henry started work with the Railways as a Labourer in Bunbury in 1904, and then enlisted in the Army on 16 August 1910. He married Valborg (Vally) Caroline Jorgensen (born 1892 in Melbourne, Victoria) in 1914 in Perth WA. Henry was a Gunner (Service No: WP 628( with the Royal Australian Garrison Artillery 5MD, and was a Private living at the Artillery Barracks in Fremantle WA when he enlisted for service with the AIF in 1917. He served with the 1st Australian Light Railways Operating Corps 13/12 Railway Corps as a Sapper (Service No: 1136) on the Western Front and was Discharged in 1919.

Henry and Vally lived and raised their family in Fremantle and Perth WA, where Henry continued employment as a Soldier until his retirement in February 1945. On 11 October 1928, Henry was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Commonwealth Gazette Notice No: 56/1935). In 1936, Henry was deployed to Darwin, NT as part of the Coast Defence 9 Heavy Battery RAA, and in July 1939 was promoted to Master Gunner 1st Class. In 1940 he was a Warrant Officer with Heavy Brigade RAA
