OBITUARIES LATE D. E BEVIS

Merredin residents were greatly shocked to learn of the death of one of its most popular residents in Mr. Danial Edmund Bevis in the Merredin district hospital on September 16. The late Mr. Bevis, 'Danny' as he was known to his many friends, was born in Mt. Helena, Western Australia and came to Merredin as a boy. When he left school he joined the service of the WAGR as call-boy, and later advanced through the various stages of cleaner, fireman, etc. until 1940, when he enlisted in the AIF. For many years the late Mr Bevis was a keen footballer, playing with Merredin Railways up to the time of his enlistment. Most local followers of the national game will remember he played a hard rugged game, and was always considered a very fair man on the field. He played the game of life the same way, taking the rough with the smooth and was always ready to assist wherever possible. After joining the AIF he was drafted to the 2/4 Machine Gun Battalion and went overseas. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese on February 13, 1942. His life for the next three and a half years was of continued misery, underfed and overworked. But "Danny" was one of the boys who never lost hope and was a tower of strength to many of his companions during the years of incarceration. On his return to Australia and to Merredin he was a changed man broken in health. This necessitated many trips to Hollywood Military Hospital for treatment. He also received treatment at the Merredin District Hospital. The late Mr. Bevis leaves a widow, four  sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. The cortege left All Saints Anglican Church, Merredin, at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday and proceeded to the Merredin cemetery where Rev. D. R. Bazely conducted the Service at the graveside. Military Honours were accorded the late Mr. Bevis, Reveille and Last Post being sounded by Bugler Clyde Campbell, Pall-bearers: Messrs. L. H. Bray, C. A. Albury, M. A. Kelly, F. Forrest, D. M.
