Gill was born in London, England in the United Kingdom. Before the war, John William Gill worked as a gardener. He was married to Marie Louisa Martha Gill and was a member of the Church of England. In Australia, before the war, he lived in Inglewood, Adelaide Hills.

He enlisted at Morphett Ville in South Australia aged 30 as a Sergeant in the 9th Light Horse Regiment B Squadron on the 11th of September in 1914. His service number was 214. Unfortunately, John William Gill was killed on Hill 60 in Gallipoli, Dardanelles Turkey on the 29th of August 1915.
