Private Bernard John Gurney (Service Nos:N3763/NX131754) initially served in the Militia (21 January 1939) as a Trooper attached to 6th Light Horse Regiment before enlisting in the ACMF on 31 December 1941. Private Gurney was attached to 6 Australian Motor Regiment (AMR) on 29 August 1942 when he Discharged to enlist the following day in the AIF. Designated Driver Mechanic, Private Gurney was attached to 1 Training Battalion RAE, 2/11 Armoured Car Regiment and, at Discharge on 25 June 1946, 23 Motorised Equipment Park Coy RAE. Siblings Bill, Laurie and Lou also served in WWII.
Bernie was born in Cowra, NSW in 1920, third of six children of William Gurney (b1889 in Boorowa, NSW) and Edith Ann Cooke (b1895 in Nelligen, NSW). William (a Shearer) and Edith married in 1914 in Cowra, NSW and settled at Mandurama, where they raised their family and William was a Shearer.
Bernie worked as a Shearer in Mandurama before enlisting in the Army. In 1946 in Sydney, he married Elma Jean McNeil (b1925 in Hay, NSW) - Elma was working in Sydney as an Overlocker. Bernie and Elma lived in Cowra and Hay, where they raised their family and Bernie was a Shearing Contractor and Manager. Bernie died in 1998 and Elma in 2019.
