Jacob was the youngest of three children of Jacob Dickinson Snr (born 1839 in Lincolnshire, England) and Mary Ann O'Connell (born 1840 in Scotland). Jacob Snr served with the British Army 55th Foot as a Private (Regimental No: 1528) from 1857 to 1877 and married Mary in County Cork in Ireland in 1861. Jacob's and Mary's three children were born in India, and in 1878 the family immigrated to Brisbane, QLD. Mary died in 1891, and Jacob Snr, working as a Carpenter in Brisbane, QLD, died in 1911.

Jacob had lived in Brisbane, Nabour and Maleny working as a Labourer, House Painter and Fisherman before marrying Mary Ellen O'Leary (born 1892 in Toowoomba, QLD) in 1915 in Sandgate, QLD.

Jacob and Mary were living in Sandgate in 1916 and Jacob was working as a Labourer when he enlisted in the AIF in June 1917. Jacob served with 11th Reinforcements 4th Pioneer Battalion as a Sapper in France before being Discharged in May 1918 on medical grounds. Jacob had previously served with the Moreton Regiment, Brisbane.

Jacob's brother John Thomas served with 8th Reinforcements 25th Infantry Battalion as a Private (3491) and died in 1917.

Jacob returned to Sandgate, QLD, working as a Fisherman and Labourer until his death in 1938. Mary died in 1923.
