Son of Jane Sophia and John Ashmore Hamilton EVATT
Of Grantham Street, Milsons's Point, North Sydney, NSW

Joined the staff at CSR in January 1912

Enlisting as a Private early in 1915, he joined the 20th Battalion, with which he remained during the whole of his service, attaining successively the ranks of Sergeant, Company Sergeant-Major, 2nd Lieutenant and Lieutenant.  From August 1915 until the evacuation he was on Gallipoli, taking part in various minor operations, and after a period in Egypt, his Battalion proceeded to France.  There, from March 1916 to september 1917 Evatt remained, participating in a great number of engagements including Pozieres, Bullecourt, Messines, Bapaume, Warlencourt and Passchendaele, and for conspicuous gallantry in action at Warlencourt he was awarded the Military Cross.

Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his men forward under very heavy fire in a most gallant manner, and succeeded in capturing his objective. He has previously done fine work.'

He was wounded on two different occasions, and on the 20th September 1917 he was killed in action during the third battle of Ypres.  A brother also served.
