Biography

Basil Gardner Sonwdon, born 7 April 1895. Enlisted with AIF at Morphettville, South Australia on 3 September 1914.

Embarked on 17 September 1914 via Melbourne on the ship HMAT Geelong A2 as part of the 12th Infantry Battalion.

Embarked HMT Devanha to join MEF Alexandria at the Gallipoli Peninsula 2/5/15.

Sometime between the 25th and the 28th of April 1915, he was wounded in the left foot. ''Hit by bullets (explosion) blowing portion of ankle joint away, amputated on Hospital Ship on May 13th.'' The left leg was eventually amputated below the knee on the Hospital Ship ''Letitia'' 13th May 1915. 

Transferred to convalesce in England before his eventual discharge to Australia with pension 1st July 1916.

He returned to the Wilmington area to a small farm at Turka where he married on the 6th of January 1918. He had 5? Children, and eventually died 19 December 1955.
