Arthur James CARNELL, (Service Number 492), was born on 26 January 1893 at Bungendore NSW. He was employed as a casual engine cleaner at Wellington Locomotive Depot from 13 September 1911. He became a permanent employee on 18 April 1912. He then worked at Picton and Goulburn. By June 1914 he had been promoted to locomotive fireman. He joined the AIF on 25th August, soon after the outbreak of the war.
He left Australia from Sydney on board HMAT ‘Euripides’ on 20th October 1914. He joined the 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion.
He was killed in action on the same day of the landing at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915.
He is buried at Quinn’s Post Cemetery, Gallipoli, although his headstone is engraved ‘Believed to be buried in this Cemetery’.
