Albert's parents were John Smiley and Margaret Benson. Albert attended North Pine State School. He was working as a cook and living in South Brisbane when he enlisted 13 March 1916 at Brisbane. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes. He arrived home February 1919. Albert married Alvena Ada Kassulke at Brisbane in 1920. He died aged 65. Albert had two brothers who enlisted as well, William Henry [4624] and George [4603]. All three brothers enlisted within days of each other and all embarked together on board HMAT A64 Demosthenes. They all returned home.
