Private Albert Ernest Smith (Service No:2756) enlisted in the AIF on 6 March 1916 with 19th Depot Battalion Geelong. On 20 October 1916 Private Smith embarked with 46th Infantry Battalion from Melbourne for Devonport on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln. Private Smith served in France with 46th Infantry Battalion and 4th Machine Gum Battalion - he was hospitalised with diptheria and measles and, on 3 April 1918, was WiA with a GSW to his shoulder and was invalided to England. Private Smith embarked from Southampton for the RTA on 9 March 1919 on board the Kashmir and was attached to 4th Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 17 June 1919.

Bert was born in 1891 in Neerim Victoria, eldest of six children of Robert Smith (b1857 in Woolert, Victoria) and his second wife Henrietta Maria Schultz (b1861 in Woodstock, Victoria). Robert (a Widower with five children) and Henrietta married in 1890 in Melbourne, Victoria. Robert and Henrietta settled in Neerim where they raised their family and Robert was a Farmer and Contractor.

Bert worked as a Labourer in Neerim, and in 1914 was in Pinjarra, WA when he married Lucy Annie Ford (b1887 in Kent, England) - Lucy had worked as a Domestic Servant and Children's Hospital Helper before immigrating in 1912, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Orsova. Bert and Lucy settled in Neerim, Victoria where they raised their family and Bert worked as a Labourer, Splitter and Farmer. Bert died in 1967 and Lucy in 1974.
