Sergeant D'arcy Golbie Matthews (Service No:NX81196) enlisted in the AIF on 31 December 1941 as a Private with General Details Depot and 9 Pioneer Training Battalion. On 16 July 1942 he was posted to 2/2 Pioneer Battalion as a Lance Corporal, and was a Corporal on 6 August 1943 when he embarked with his Unit from Townsville for Port Moresby. Corporal Matthews emplaned from Moresby on 10 December 1943 for the mainland - where he was hospitalised with Nephritis and Malaria. Sergeant Matthews was attached to 2/2 Pioneer Battalion at Discharge on 1 May 1944 - 'medically unfit for further military service' (NAA). Sergeant Matthews was one of five brothers - Lindsay, Jack, Tom and Neville - who served in WWII.
D'arcy was born in Sydney, NSW in 1916, tenth of eleven children of Sidney Richard Matthews (b1882 in Obley via Molong, NSW) and Emily Mary Clarissa Tyler (b1882 in Cobar, NSW). Sidney and Emily (both 17 years of age) married in 1900 in Peak Hill, where they settled and raised their family, and Sidney was an Auctioneer (partner in the firm Messrs Roache and Matthews). By 1930 Sidney and Emily had settled in Sydney, where Sidney worked as a Clerk until his death in 1943.
D'arcy worked as a Stud Groom in Peak Hill where, in 1936, he married Marjorie Ruth Titheradge (b1917 in Condobolin, NSW). D'arcy and Marjorie settled in Peak Hill, where they raised their family and D'arcy worked as a Groom and Horse Trainer. In the early 1960s D'arcy and Marjorie moved to Sydney, where D'arcy worked as a Barman until retirement. They moved to Parkes, NSW, where D'arcy died in 1994 and Marjorie in 2010.
