Corporal Clement Richard Moroney (Service No:NX34135) enlisted in the AIF on 17 June 1940, and was attached to 2/1 Pioneer Battalion on 30 September 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for Palestine on board the John de Witt. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 11 July 1941, he embarked from the Middle East for Adelaide on 1 April 1942 on board USS West Point. Lance Corporal Moroney served in New Guinea with 2/1 Pioneer Battalion (28 August 1942 - 5 October 1943), was promoted to Corporal, and was detached for a period to undertake PoW Escort Duties. Corporal Moroney served in Borneo (Morotai and Balikapan) with 2/1st Pioneer Battalion (2 May 1944 - 5 September 1945), and was Discharged on 13 October 1945. (NAA Service Records, including Discharge Certificate and Post War correspondence, use his rank as Corporal; the DVA Nominal Roll has his rank at Discharge as Private). Younger brother Frank (Private; Service No:NX18426) was serving with 2/1 Pioneer Battalion in New Guinea when he was KiA on 22 September 1943.
Clem was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1914, third of six children of Clement Leo Bede Moroney (b1889 in Sydney, New South Wales) and Agnes Bishop Crum (b1889 in Sydney, New South Wales). Clement and Agnes married in 1911 in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family and Clement was a Tram Conductor and Bricklayer. Clement served in both WWI (Private: Service No:3077) and WWII (ACMF; Private; Service No:N333967). Clement died in 1959 and Agnes in 1971.
Clem worked as a Labourer in Sydney before enlisting in the Army, and in 1942 married Irene Isabelle Wyman (b1914 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Irene worked as a Machinist. Following his Discharge from the Army, Clem and Irene settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Clem worked as a Labourer and Gardener. Clem died in 2000 and Irene in 2008.
