70 years ago today, on the 18th November 1955, Private Norman Jerome Ahearn, 5th Australian Infantry Brigade Headquarters (Reg No-2856), jockey from 44 Durham Street, Bathurst, New South Wales and 111 Keppel Street, Bathurst, N.S.W. and "The Luxon", 358 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, N.S.W. (1936) and Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. CATHOLIC 2-35. 122.
Born at Bathurst, New South Wales on the 15th October 1897 to Jerome, died 29.6.1955, Bathurst, N.S.W., age 87, buried at Bathurst Cemetery, N.S.W., and Lilian (Lily) Madeline Susan Ahearn nee Heath, died 9.8.1931, 205 Devonshire Street, Sydney, N.S.W., age 61, sleeping at Rookwood General Cemetery, N.S.W., unmarked grave?; husband of Dorothea Ahearn nee Macdonald or McDonald, married 1940, Sydney, N.S.W., died?, Norman enlisted on the 6th September 1916 with the 58th Battalion at Sydney, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A19 Afric on the 3rd November 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.1.1917.
Wounded in action - 26.3.1917 (GSW right shoulder), 12.5.1917 (SW or GSW left leg), 2.10.1917 (SW or GSW left arm & face, mild), 6.8.1918 (gassed).
Granted furlough in England from 12.11.1917 to 26.11.1917 and leave to France from 29.1.1919 to 12.2.1919.
Transferred to 20th Battalion 21.10.1918.
Transferred from 20th battalion to 5th Australian Infantry Brigade Headquarters 10.1.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 12.6.1919.
Norman arrived home on the 27th July 1919, being discharged on the 4th September 1919.
Mr. Ahearn’s name has been inscribed on the Bathurst Public School Roll of Honour. No Bathurst Municipality Roll of Honor or a Bathurst WW1 Memorial located.
I have placed poppies at Norman’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
According to the AIF Project, awarded the Military Medal, recommendation date: 2nd April 1917.
Service record gives no indication of this.
Older brother Harold Ahern, born 17.1.1894, Bathurst, N.S.W., single musician from 44 Durham Street, Bathurst, New South Wales, enlisted 4.12.1916, 20th Battalion, Reg No-6516, RTA 12.11.1919, died - Ryan Dudley information, Harold was 'Bombed in the Blitz' and died at Botley Park War Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey, England on 22 March 1943. Also see a tribute to Harold's son John Cornelius Ahearn, also known as Jack.

Norman Jerome Ahearn / A'hearn, 58th Battalion, AIF; son of Jerome Ahern / Ahearn and grandson of Jeremiah Joseph Ahern who was a younger brother of my great-great-grandfather James Ahern.
