William HAYTHORNTHWAITE was born in Bendigo, Victoria in 1893

His parents were William James HAYTHORNTHWAITE & Margaret Jane HARDY

He died of appendicitis in the Fargo Military Hospital in England on 9th January, 1917 and is buried in the Durrington Cemetery

Inscription reads:

"THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY - EVER DEAR"

Died on this date – 9th January…… William Haythornthwaite was born in 1893 at Bendigo, Victoria.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 14th March, 1916 as a 22 year old, single, Farmer from Perth, Western Australia.

Private William Haythornthwaite, Service number 6525, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Suffolk (A23) on 10th October, 1916 with the 11th Infantry Battalion, 21st Reinforcements & disembarked at Plymouth, England on 2nd December, 1916.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was marched in from Australia to 8th Training Battalion & then transferred to 3rd Training Battalion, No. 3 Camp, Durrington, Wiltshire on 17th December, 1916.

On 17th December, 1916 Private Haythornthwaite was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire seriously ill with acute appendicitis.

Private William Haythornthwaite died on 9th January, 1917 at Fargo Military Hospital, Wiltshire from Appendicitis.

He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
