Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Arthur was the eldest of four children (and only son) of Francis (Frank) Valentine Cecil Coombes (b1893 in Richmond, Melbourne, Victoria) and Violette Sylvia Standen (b1887 in Bombala, NSW). Frank (a Labourer) and Violette married in 1915 in Orbost, Victoria - the year Frank enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:2606). Following service in Egypt, Belgium and France, Frank was Discharged in 1919 and he and Violette settled in the Maffra, Gippsland region to raise their family. Frank worked initially as a Labourer until 1921 when he purchased acerage under the Discharged Soldiers' Act 1917 for mixed farming. By 1936 the family had left the farm and was living in Maffra where Frank was a Labourer.

Arthur was a Grocer in Maffra in December 1942 when he enlisted in the Australian Army. He was a Private (Service No:VX122152) attached to 119 Reserve Motor Transport Coy when he was Discharged in 1944.

Returning to Maffra, Arthur was a Grocer in 1947 when he married Joan Emily Redman (b1925 in Stratford, Victoria). The couple settled in Maffra where Arthur was a Grocer. He died in 1999 and Joan in 2012.
