Leading Aircraftman Norman Gooding (Service No:41079) initially served in the Militia/ACMF (Private (Service No:V7561) with 26th and 19th Machine Gun Regiments and 4 Training Battalion for 21/2 years before enlisting in the RAAF as an Aircraftman at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne on 10 June 1941. During 1941 ACI Gooding (mustered as Flight Mechanic) was attached to No 2 Air Obervers' School (AOS) Mt Gambier and No 1 Engineering School (ES) Ascot Vale. As Leading Aircraftman (1943 - 1946) he was attached to No 5 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) Narromine, No 11 Elementary Flying Training School Benalla, 3 Air Observers School (AOS), No 11  and No 1 Engineering School (ES) Ascot Vale. LAC Gooding was attached to 1 Aircraft Depot (AD) at Discharge on 18 March 1946.

Norm was born in Dimboola, Victoria in 1921, fourth of six children of James Gooding (b1879 in Tea Tree Gully, South Australia) and Laura Agnes Williams (b1888 in Horsham, Victoria). James was a Farmer in 1912 when he and Laura married in 1912. They lived in Dimboola and Antwerp via Dimboola where they raised their famly and James was a Farmer.

Norm worked in Antwerp as a Blacksmith's Striker and Telephone Operator, and was a Labourer when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1941. Following his Discharge, in 1946 in Port Pirie, South Australia he married Kate (Kaye) Atwell (b1923 in Port Pirie, South Australia). Norm and Kate settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Norm worked as a Storeman and Manager. Norm died in 2011.
