Son of James O'Connell and Elizabeth O'Connell nee Hogan of Roebuck Street, Adelaide, SA.

Brother of Michael John O'Connell who was killed in action on 23 July 1916 while serving with the 10th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

Commenced return to Australia on 1 November 1917 aboard HT Anchises disembarking on 1 January 1918
