One of three brothers (Arthur, Herbert and Clifford) who served in WWII, Private Herbert Charles Helps (Service No:NX91939) enlisted in the AIF on 11 March 1942 with General Details Depot before being marched out to 5 Infantry Training Battalion. Private Helps was attached to 9 Infantry Training Battalion on 25 August 1942 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East on board US16 - P3. On 31 July 1943 Private Helps embarked from Cairns for Milne Bay with 2/17 Infantry Battalion on board the E Channing, returning from Finschaffen to Brisbane on 2 March 1944 on board the Klipfontein. Private Helps was attached to 2/17 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 23 August 1944.
Born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1910, Herbert was second of three children (sons) of Charles Helps (b1877 in Sydney, New South Wales) and Ellen Maud Field (b1882 in Hertfordshire, England) - Ellen immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1885, arriving in Sydney on board the Cuzco. Charles joined the New South Wales Public Service (Treasury, Pay Branch) as a Junior Clerk in 1892, and he and Ellen married in in Sydney in 1907. The family settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Charles was a Public Servant and later a Merchant. In the 1920s Charles purchased properties in the Hillston region - Hunthawong Station and later Vieta Station - which he managed with his sons, and continued as a Merchant and Company Manager.
Herbert was a Grazier on Vieta Station via Hillston, and in 1940 in Sydney married Lillian Jean Lumsden (b1910 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Lillian was working in Parkes as a Mercer. Herbert and Lillian settled at Vieta Station via Hillston, where Herbert was a Grazier and served as Director of the Pastures Protection Board for the District of Hillston. Following his Discharge from the Army, Herbert returned to Vieta Station, where he and Lillian raised their family and Herbert was a Grazier. In the early 1960s the couple moved to Tenterden, where Herbert was a Grazier until his death in 1969. Lillian died in 1991.
