Ernest was the eldest of seven children of Thomas Peter Baker (b1882 in Batesford, Victoria) and Gertrude Ethel Wilson (b1895 in Tyabbm Victoria). Thomas - a Farmer - and Gertrude married in 1915 in Hastings, Victoria. Thomas and Gertrude moved to Frankston, Victoria in the early 1920s, where Thomas was a Labourer.

Ernest was a Radio Technician in Frankston, Victoria when he enlisted with the Militia in February 1935. He was a Private (Service No:132160) with 46th Battalion when he was Discharged in January 1937.

In 1940 Ernest was working as a Radio Mechanic and living in Orbost, Victoria when he enlisted with the ACMF (Private; Service No:V74162), and in 1941 he married Dorothy Jean Bilson (b1921 in Drouin, Victoria). Ernest and Dorothy settled in Orbost, Victoria where Ernest was a Radio Mechanic. In the early 1970s they relocated to Bairnsdale, Victoria where Ernest worked as an Electrician. Ernest died in 2004 and Dorothy in 2011.
