Lyall Leonard was born on 9 Sep 1897 at Gilberton the son of James Knuckey and his wife Elizabeth Ann nee Hunter.

Following the death of his father his mother moved to Geelong with her partner Robert Angus Duncan and Lyall's name was changed to Duncan.
